Do you know what Roon is? Do you think you need to know? Should you even care? When hi-fi manufacturers launch a new amplifier or loudspeaker, the question immediately turns to its styling, specification and indeed performance. Rarely – if ever – does one ever end up asking: “Why do I need it?”, or “How will owning such a thing make my life better?” The problem for Roon founder Enno Vandermeer is that his product needs a whole lot of explanation before people can take a view about whether they actually want it. “We created an experience that people were missing. The only trouble is, they didn’t know it!”, he says.

Six new models join Rotel’s stereo separates lineup from this month with three integrated amplifiers – A14, A12 and A10, plus the CD14 CD player and two tuners – T14 (£699) and T11 (£329) – offering FM/DAB reception as well as streaming radio playback via DTS Play-Fi. The flagship A14 amplifier (£999) offers 2x 80W into 8ohm and has Bluetooth aptX connectivity along with USB, coaxial and optical digital inputs handled via a 32-bit/768kHz DAC. The A12 (£799) and A10 (£389) models are rated at 60W and 40W respectively. The CD14 CD player (£549) is equipped with a Wolfson 24-bit/192kHz DAC and has coaxial digital and analogue outputs.

Following the addition of its 14 Series of components in October last year, Rotel has been hard at work on models further up its hi-fi hierarchy with three new stereo-only 15 Series components – plus a multi-channel surround amplifier, the RAP-1590 (£3,395) – aimed at aficionados looking to make the next step up. First up, the RC-1572 two-channel preamplifier (£945) is ideally suitedto match with one of the company's existing 15 Series stereo power amplifiers. The new preamp is fitted with relay switching for analogue sources (rather than IC based), which claims to ensure the integrity of the signal path for analogue inputs that include XLRs, 4x RCA and a moving-magnet phono stage. Its 32-bit AKM4495 DAC handles optical and coaxial inputs (up to 24-bit/192kHz), and USB up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM as well as DSD128.

The new Signature One is described by Rothwell Audio as a very unusual moving coil phono stage. The reason for this claim? The fact that it uses transformer coupling rather than transistors. As Rothwell points out this is because of the expense of the former, but it notes that they are ideally suited to the very low signal levels produced by low output moving coil cartridges. The result is a claimed sublime sound that lacks the harshness that can afflict transistor circuits.

Following on from its MR1 compact standmount, launched in 2013, Ruark Audio has unveiled details of the follow up. The MR1 Mk2 retains all the attributes of the original, but has undergone a cosmetic update following Ruark customer feedback. Though it retains the same compact dimensions (130 x 170 x135mm – wxhxd), its looks have been significantly enhanced with a choice of finishes (Rich Walnut or Soft Grey) available finish, MR1 Mk2 has been designed to look and sound great in multiple applications and locations. While the 75mm neodymium tweeter and woofer drive units remain the same as the original MR1, enhancements have been made to the crossover and topology of the speaker's linear Class A-B amplifiers (delovering 20W nominal output).
