New sub-£600 do-it-all vinyl spinner now available

TEAC has underlined its commitment to hi-res with the release of the UD-503 dual-monaural USB DAC/headphone amplifier and the NT-503DAB USB DAC/network player (above). The UD-503 boasts support for 11. 2MHz DSD and 32/384 PCM formats. With a set of analogue inputs also provided and a 256-step QVSC (Quad Volume Control System), it can act as a standalone preamp, either partnered with power amps or active speakers.

Adored by hi-fi fans and DJs alike around the world, it was a sad day in 2010 when Technics finally announced that it would cease production of its iconic SL-1200 direct-drive turntable due to dwindling vinyl sales and the riseof more practical music formats. The SL-1200 was originally built for hi-fi fans when it launched in 1972, but its consistent performance, robust build and unique pitch-shifting ability made it the go-to deck for many DJs, who managed to prolong the deck's life long after many hi-fi fans had sold their record collections to car boot sales. Even so, its departure from the market was a surprise and perhaps even a little premature given the growing interest we've seen in the vinyl market in the last few years. Thankfully though, the legendary vinyl spinner looks set to make a comeback later this year.

If proof were needed of vinyl's return as a mainstream format,then Technics' comeback with the reimagining of its legendary SL-1200 turntable in 2016, was a powerful symbol of just how popular the music format has become. Technics ceased production of its turntables back in 2010, which lead to protests fromits loyal fans around the world. Seemingly, someone at Technicswas listening, as the iconic turntable returned in a redesigned limited-edition SL-1200GAE form last year and was so popular that several incarnations have since followed, broadening its appeal to new fansat more accessible price points. It seems nothing can stop the company's passion for the vinyl format, and the star of this year's IFA show held in September to the delight of many audio fans was the announcement of a flagship SP-10R turntable motor unit expected to be released in summer 2018.

If you weren’t fortunate enough to get your hands on one of the 900 limited edition SL-1200GAE turntables outside of Japan (or the 300 in Japan), fear not as the update of Technics legendary turntable will still be coming to stores in the form of the SL-1200G you see before you here. Boasting a three-layer construction, which consistsof a rigidly combined heavyweight brass and aluminium die-cast platter with deadening rubber covering the entire surface, the SL-1200G is claimed to eliminate resonance and achieve high rigidity and vibration damping during playback. The tonearm follows suit, employing lightweight magnesium, which has been cold drawn to further increase the damping effect. Technics additionally claims that cogging has been eliminated thanks to a new coreless direct-drive motor, which suppresses potential vibrations using high-precision rotary positioning sensors guided by a microprocessor-controlled system.
