One new arrival is the Zero turntable from British newcomer Analogue Works. We have already sampled the company’s Turntable One, which was highly Recommended when reviewed in issue 388.

ATC describes its new SCM19 Active Tower speaker system as delivering "the company’s reference-quality audio from an elegantly curved floor-standing design". Measuring 370mm wide and 980mm in height, it will no doubt be familiar to seasoned fans of the company's speakers as it is acoustically identical to the two-way SCM19 (tested in HFC 390). The 25mm tweeter employs a unique dual-suspension system, which has been designed to suppress rocking modes even at high power output levels. The configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap is claimed to deleiver exceptionally low distortion throughout the operating band and removes the need for ferrofluids.

We're seeing a growing number of brands introducing new or revised entry-level speaker lines, proving that there's growing interest in the sector attracting new audiences looking to take the first steps along the hi-fi path. It's a healthy state of affairs, and the plentiful choice of models on offer ensures there's lots of competition, meaning better-quality products and lower prices for everyone. Dynaudio is the latest loudspeaker maker to join this increasingly popular sector with the introduction of its Emit entry-level series. The new range officially launched at the Bristol Hi-Fi Show back in Februarywith the four-strong range promising high-level performance at affordable prices, according to the Danish manufacturer.

But HFC is anything but exclusive, so for those that haven’t been paying attention or weren’t aware, we’ll go over the details just one more time. Vinyl is back and it’s more popular than its been for a very long time. The result is that everyone from youngsters wanting to experience music on something other than their phones to those that put their record collections in the loft 20 years ago are realising the real power of the black stuff.

While branded as a valve amplifier, Fosgate’s Signature headphone amplifier is actually a hybrid design that incorporates both valves and solid-state electronics. With a pair of 12AX7 dual-triode valves in a low-distortion series regulated push-pull configuration in the input/driver stage, the Signature features special buffers to provide a pure audio path and drive headphones directly. A patented bass boost equaliser circuit is claimed to improve low-frequency bass impact without adding boom or muddiness and there are three choices of settings, enabling a more tailored sound depending on the headphones used. A surround sound function has been included to add more spaciousness to headphone listening, while a patented Panorama Control circuit applies an out of phase cross blend to move the dimensional soundstage out of the head in the hope of creating a more natural performance.

Her manager Vicki Wickham and friend Simon Napier Bell wrote some lyrics in English for Dusty who famously recorded 47 takes before she was happy with how it sounded, even moving out to the stairwell of the studio in an attempt to get the acoustics right. Based on the HD 800 (Editor’s Choice award winner back in HFC 324), Sennheiser has unveiled its latest headphone, the HD 800 S. The new headphone, claims the manufacturer, has had the sound reproduction optimised through the innovative absorber tech that was introduced on the IE 800 (HFC 385). This does away with the masking effect that makes high-pitched effects difficult to hear at lower volumes. The 56mm transducer of the HD 800 also remains and the headphone comes with a 3m-long XLR4 cable.
