Monitor Audio debuts Gold Series 6G range
The new cone also utilises Monitor Audio’s proprietary C-CAM technology, which when compared with standard aluminium designs – the company claims – produces a stronger, more fatigue-resistant cone. The new HDT, C-CAM cones have been utilised across the whole range, including a new 76mm mid-frequency driver, a 152mm mid/bass unit and 152mm and 203mm bass drivers.
In addition to the cones, key acoustic features include a revised version of Monitor Audio’s MPD III (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) transducer used in both Hyphn and the Platinum Series. This bespoke design has been created in a bid to deliver precise high-frequency sound with greater consistency, clarity and accuracy.
The crossovers have also been optimised for in-room performance. Monitor says this is particularly important for the new On-Wall 6G model, where typical usage is closer to custom install than traditional hi-fi.
All the Gold Series 6G’s cabinets have been designed to form: “the most rigid structure possible”, thus allowing the drivers to perform to their optimum capabilities. A top trim detail on the 100 and 500 models allows the MPD III high-frequency transducer to be placed further up the cabinet, optimising the cabinet edge diffraction on these larger models. Monitor says this helps deliver consistent and precise imaging across the entire frequency range.
For the first time, the Gold Series 6G also boasts a man-made Ebony veneer alongside High-Gloss Black and Satin White finishes.
The range consists of the flagship Gold 500 6G, which costs £5,500 and has a smaller footprint and slimmer profile. This three-way floorstander has an MPD tweeter, 76mm HDT C-CAM midrange and two 203mm HDT C-CAM bass drivers. Sensitivity is claimed to be 88.5dB (4ohm).
The Gold 300 6G floorstander has the same tweeter and midrange with two 152mm bass drivers. Sensitivity is quoted as 87dB (4ohm) and it costs £4,000. The three-way Gold 100 6G standmount has the same tweeter and midrange combined with a 203mm bass driver. It has 86.5dB (4ohm) sensitivity and costs £3,000. The smaller Gold 50 6G reduces the bass driver to 152mm, has 85dB (4ohm) sensitivity and costs £1,700. The Gold On-Wall 6G has the same drivers as the Gold 50 6G, but in a slimmer cabinet for hanging on the wall. Costing £1,000, it has 88dB (4ohm) sensitivity. Completing the range, the £1,700 Gold C250 6G is a centre channel speaker for home cinema setups.
