Drawing on the strengths of its Platinum I range, Monitor Audio premiered its new Platinum II loudspeakers at CES in Las Vegas. Highlights include new MPD (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) high-frequency transducers and RDTII woven carbon fibre drivers. Top-of-the-range among the three new floorstander models is the luxury PL500 II, a three-way/seven-driver system using four 8in bass and twin 4in midrange drivers in a M-T-M array. The PL200 II is a compact three-way/four-driver floorstander with twin 6.

Monitor Audio’s compact S150 Bluetooth loudspeaker (£150) is constructed from a mineral-filled polymer surrounding a cluster of four specialised drivers. These includea proprietary gold dome C-CAM tweeter flanked on angled baffles by dual 3in C-CAM metal cone bass drivers and a rear-firing Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR). The C-CAM drivers are powered directly by Class D amplifiers, generating a claimed 40W, and are fed by a hi-res DAC. Frequency range is quoted at 80Hz-25kHz.

Few loudspeaker designs use complete metal mid/bass drivers, and fewer still combine them with ribbon tweeters. Monitor Audio has always gone its own way and like its predecessor, the latest Gold Series iteration balances the company's established C-CAM driver and MPD high-frequency transducer and introduces tech derived from its flagship Platinum II Series. Reduced to six models in this revised lineup,it includes three hi-fi pairs – a standmount and two floorstanders, plus a centre speaker, rear/FX speakers and a subwoofer for multi-channel installations. Priced at £1,400 the two-way Gold 100 standmount is fitted with a 165mm C-CAM mid/bass driver and rated at 86dB sensitivity.

On display for the first time at The Bristol Show in February (seeour full report in the latest issue), the Studio is the latest two-way standmount design from Monitor Audio. Without any kind of grille, Studio's designers tell us that the intention was to make the two metallic-silver RDT II speaker cones the focal point and give it an eye-catching contemporary edge. The dual 102mm drivers are modified versions of those found on its Platinum range flagship PL500 II floorstander. Utilising the same design principles and materials, a micro pleated diaphragm (MPD) is used as the cental high-frequency transducer.
