Move over Stockholm: when it comes to coolness, Gothenburg has all boxes ticked. Sweden’s laidback second city is a cultural oasis, so it’s little surprise that there are plenty of compelling reasons for vinyl tourists to head over and dig Göteborg’s bulging crates. This beautiful, compact city is easy to navigate by bus, tram or as a pedestrian. Don’t worry about the language barrier, either: just like the inhabitants of relaxed Scandinavian neighbour Copenhagen (see HFC 417), Göteborgare are friendly people capable of largely flawless English.

John Grant’s third album, the invitingly titledGrey Tickles, Black Pressure goes on sale on 2 October. Recorded in Dallas with producer John Congleton (St Vincent, Franz Ferdinand, Swans), Grey Tickles, Black Pressurelooks set to cement Grant's reputation as the most disarmingly honest, caustic, profound and funny diarist of the human condition in the 21stcentury. “I do think the album’s great, and I’m really proud of it,” Grant says. “I wanted to get moodier and angrier on this record, but I probably had a lot more fun making it.

Whether you’re a fan of digital or analogue audio, there is little to argue about when it comes to displaying information. If one is looking for a precise readout, then a digital display is the way to go. One of the first electronic digital displays was the Nixie tube, which is a cold cathode tube filled with neon in which all of the digits 0-9 are separate cathodes within the tube. The tubes were developed in 1955 by the Burroughs Corporation, which named them ‘Nixie’ based on the internal designation of the tube ‘NIX 1’ (Numeric Indicator eXperimental No.

It’s 9:30am, 28 June 2016, Air Studios, London and Studio 1 is buzzing with anticipationfor what could be an epic new direct cut recording for Mike Valentine’s specialist record label Chasing The Dragon. For those of you less familiar with a direct cut recording, the sound captured in the studio briefly passes through the mixing desk up to a cutting lathe that captures the performance live. The whole side of the record is cut in real time. No second takes, no extra pause between tracks.

A familiar name to older hi-fi enthusiasts, German company Dual was once the largest manufacturer of turntables in Europe – its name a reference to the dual-mode power supplies the company pioneered in the early thirties for its gramophones, which could be powered either by electricity or their wind-up mechanism. Throughout the sixties, seventies and eighties Dual produced a series of class-leading products, and now as vinyl enjoys a renaissance, it has returned to the UK with three new offerings: the MTR-15, MTR-40 and MTR-75 with USB (pictured). The £125 MTR-15 is the most basic offering of the trio, offering fully automatic operation. Styled like a pro-audio DJ deck, the £230 MTR-40 is a direct-drive turntable with variable speed control, but of most interest is the £250 MTR-75, which the company describes as the perfect option for audiophiles on a budget.

Danish loudspeaker company Dynaudio has introduced its five-strong Evoke Series, which includes two standmounts, two floorstanders and a dedicated centre for multi-channel setups. Designed at its purpose-built R&D facility in Skanderborg, the series fits the same new 28mm Cerotar tweeter with Hexis inner dome to all models. All Evoke drivers were developed alongside the company’s more upmarket Contour and Confidence loudspeaker designs and employ strong ferrite+ magnets as well as the company’s proprietary MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) cones to its bass drivers. The Evoke 10 (£1,250) is a two-way standmount with a 140mm mid/bass driver, while the 20 (£1,800) employs a 180mm mid/bass driver.
