Based inDevon, Timestep has built up a reputation for its modifications of various iconic Technics turntables over the years and now, designer Dave Cawley has turned his attention to the recently-launched SL-1200 GAE. The new Timestep EVOke is the result. Like its predecessor the EVO, the new EVOke takes a new Technics deck and makes a series of revisions (including tonearm and cartridge) to deliver what Timestep claims is a superbly engineered ‘turnkey’ turntable package. A Timestep-Technics tour de force, it's claimed that the technical measurements of the new turntable almost equal those of the iconic Technics SP-10 MK-III deck.

Following the launch of the flagship SL-1200G direct-drive turntable reviewed in HFC 418, the Japanese tech giant introduces two additional models, but with more wallet-friendly price tags. The SL-1200GR and the SL-1210GR decks have an identical specification, but come with silver and black plinth top plates respectively. The new turntables claim to utilise the same design principles as the flagship SL-1200G, but with slightly different materials and applications. 2015 will quite rightly be remembered as the year that vinyl made a comeback, but it was also a pretty impressive 12 months for music sales all round with UK consumers spending more on singles, albums and subscription music services than any year since 2011. In fact the only bad news was for music downloads, which suffered a considerable decline. In all, recorded music enjoyed £1. 06bn profit, which is a 3.

Unison Research has launched its Unico 90 integrated amp. Intended to sit under its flagship 150 model, the 90 is a valve and solid-state hybrid with a preamp stage that is built around an Alps volume control and input switching that decouples inactive inputs. The valve-based gain stage uses ECC83 and ECC81 tubes in Unison’s totem pole configuration. These are directly coupled to the output stage, which consists of three pairs of HEXFET output devices to give it a claimed power output of 2x 100W into 8ohm and 2x 160W into 4ohm.
