Monitor Audio unveils Studio loudspeaker
On display for the first time at The Bristol Show in February (see our full report in the latest issue),
the Studio is the latest two-way standmount design from Monitor Audio. Without any kind of grille, Studio's designers tell us that the intention was to make the two metallic-silver RDT II speaker cones the focal point and give it an eye-catching contemporary edge.
The dual 102mm drivers are modified versions of those found on its Platinum range flagship PL500 II floorstander. Utilising the same design principles and materials, a micro pleated diaphragm (MPD) is used as the cental high-frequency transducer. It works like an accordion, rapidly squeezing the pleats to produce a super-fast and extended frequency response, resulting – so the theory goes – in a more lifelike sound.
The slim cabinet dimensions are just 156 x 340 x 361mm (WxHxD) with two rear-mounted HiVe II slot ports, mounted at the top and bottom. HiVe allows air to move more quickly through the cabinet than with a traditional port design, resulting in what MA claims is a fast and powerful bass performance combined with superior transient response. Meanwhile, the larger surface area of the ports prevents the turbulence and subsequent air noise that is a common problem in smaller speaker cabinets.
Handcrafted and available in a choice of sleek satin black, white or grey finishes, Studio has a claimed sensitivity of 86dB/1W/1m into 4ohm and is fitted with Rhodium-plated binding posts.
A bespoke stand has been made to accompany the Studio. Pictured right, the Stand costs £350 per pair, and comes in black or white finishes and features a laser-cut steel top plate with an extruded aluminium shaft (that can be filled for mass loading) and diecast aluminium base. It has four adjustable feet and is bundled with chrome-plated spikes and dome rubber feet to suit all flooring types.
Monitor Audio's Studio standmount loudspeaker is available to buy now for £1,000 and you can find out more about it here.
