The Venetian Tower in Las Vegas seemed an appropriately glamorous location for Chord Electronics to unveil the latest addition to its family of DACs to an expectant public at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (see this month's issue for more). Dubbed “The World’s most advanced compact DAC”, Qutest is based on the latest version of Rob Watts famed proprietary FPGA technology – developed for the Hugo 2 (HFC 428) no less. Designed for static use within the home, the new digital-to-analogue converter benefits from being powered via a 5V micro USB port, offering up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 via its USB Type-B input, 24-bit/384kHz PCM and DSD128 from its coaxial (BNC) and 24-bit/192kHz via optical Toslink. Created by Chief Designer John Franks, the new square-edged, solid aluminium chassis retains the often divisive circular magnifying porthole window seen on Hugo and similarly utilises the coloured spheres to provide the user with information relating to sample frequency and input selection.

Following on from the success of its excellent Hugo DAC (on test HFC 386), Chord Electronics has unveiled a new portable digital-to-analogue converter aimed specifically at the large number of people that listen to their music on their smartphone. Mojo connects digitally to smartphones and portable devices via either Micro USB (a cable is supplied), optical or a 3. 5mm coaxial input and is capable of playing back all format types, including the hi-res Dop and DSD 64, 128 and 256 options. Mojo utilises a new Atrix-7 FPGA chipset from Silicon Valley's Xilinx, which is a programmable circuit that Chord claims makes Mojo the most advanced DAC on the planet.

There can be few things more frustrating than sitting down to listen to a favourite record only to find that it’s filthy. Giving your vinyl a proper wet clean can be a time consuming and at times messy job. Enter Clearaudio with what it’s describing as its best solution for cleaning records yet – the Double Matrix Professional Sonic. Integrating both sonic and vacuum cleaning elements, the Double Matrix Professional Sonic record cleaner is claimed to deliver a deep, but importantly, gentle cleaning of pressing residues and persistent dirt that’s deep within the grooves of your vinyl – enabling you to listen your music as it really should be heard.

German hi-fi brand Clearaudio brings linear tracking to more vinyl fanswith its new TT5 Tangential tonearm technology, priced at £1,750. Many vinyl fans will be familiar with the benefits of this kind of tonearm, but for anyone that needs a refresher the arm is designed specifically to mimic the vinyl cutting lathe as closely as possible, maintaining a constant 90° angle to keep the cartridge parallel to the groove from the beginning to the end of a record. Tracking force and azimuth are finely adjustable, but if you want the ability to swing the arm out when loading an LP you’ll need to add the optional swing base at an extra £250. Introducing Clearaudio's latest addition to its entry-level family of moving-coil cartridges, the Essence MC. Clearaudio has been researching into moving-coil technology since 1978 and the design team found itself facing quite a challenge when tasked with developing a brand new cartridge that would improve on the existing entry-level Concept MC, without breaking a key price point. By taking the essence of the Concept MC design and applying even more stringent parameters to key elements of its construction, the German manufacturer believes it might just have come up trumps. Like the Concept MC, the Essence MC’s body is constructed from a high-density aluminium-magnesium alloy, which is then coated with a ceramic layer to minimise resonance.
