Digitising LPs and cassettes LPs and cassette tapes have a place in our hearts, and are capable of producing rewarding audio quality on a home hi-fi. But while removing an LP from its sleeve, placing it on a turntable and lowering the stylus onto the vinyl is a thrilling experience, it’s not nearly as convenient as selectinga track and pressing the ‘Play’ button on a digital media player. One of the major issues is the vulnerability of a record to physical damage. One slip of the hand could send the stylus skating over the surface, leaving a permanent scratch that results in the tell-tale repetitive click each time it is played.

System matching Part of the key to a successful setup is finding the perfect partnership, here’s how. . . It’s funny how much time and money can be devoted to buying hi-fi systems without stopping to consider one of the most critical determining factors for sound quality – that of amplifier-speaker matching.

Known for its mid-priced moving-coil cartridges, Hana has announced a deluxe line with its M-Series moving-coil cartridges. Hailing from Tokyo’s Excel Sound Corporation, the ML and MH cartridges (Low and High output options) are a development of its SL and SH designs that we reviewed in HFC 408, and utilise a Microline nude diamond tip stylus for improved tracking and performance. Both cartridges quote a frequency range of 12Hz to 45kHz with a tracking force of 2g and have threaded fittings built into the top of the cartridge body for ease of mounting. Distributed in the UK by Air Audio Services Ltd.

Japanese specialist cartridge manufacturer Hana is taking record producer Phil Spector’s Back To Mono mission statement quite literally with this new niche design. Distributed in the UK by Air Audio, the SL Mono moving-coil cartridge combines relatively low cost (£599) with high performance and is aimed at the vinyl enthusiast hoping to get the best sound out of a monaural record collection. It uses a nude natural diamond Shibata stylus, capable of an impressive frequency response (from 15Hz to 32kHz) and excellent trackability. The cartridge weighs 5g and the body is made from a composite low-resonance plastic material in stylish black.

German audio specialist Heco describes its latest loudspeaker as a combination of "traditional hi-fi values coupled with innovative technology" and it's easy to see why. The new two-wayfloorstander boasts a 275mm subwoofer featuring a lightweight HECO kraft paper diaphragm. The actuator of the diaphragm is equipped with low-loss rubber beading that's claimed to offer low distortion characteristics along with a very dry and precise bass range. Two bass reflex tubes screwed on to the bottom of the enclosure are designed to provide additional depth.

The Elixir amplifier from Heed is the first model to kick start a new range that’s aimed at music lovers seeking slimline yet flexible component solutions at a reasonable price. An integrated amplifier with a built-in MM phono stage and Class A headphone amp, it claims 50W per channel output (into 8ohm), and is flexible enough to drive a wide range of loudspeakers, says Heed. Connectivity includes four stereo RCA line-level inputs, a MM phono input and stereo preamp output. The flexible specification is designed, says Heed, to be simple for hi-fi newcomers but is flexible enough to expand your system.

Hegel has unveiled its first-ever full-sized digital-to-analogue converter in the shape of the new HD30 DAC, which the company is describing as its reference DAC. This being Hegel, though, the intention has been to come up with a product that is new and quite unlike anything that's currently available. And so Hegel describes how the development of the HD30 meant it had to tweak and improve on the best measurement equipment in the world first, before technically addressing the things its engineeers had heard and then tweaking them. First up was the noise floor.

Specialist audio brand Hegel, has garnered a reputation for doing things its own way, and so it’s no surprise to see the Norwegian name unveil plans to introduce a CD player just as many brands look set to trim down their silver disc-spinning models. Originally unveiled at the High End Show in Munich in May, the Mohican is a CD player without any digital inputs. There’s a true 75ohm BNC-output connector for transport-only use. The CD-only player uses a dedicated audio drive mechanism, and not a CD-ROM, and employs Hegel’s own servo boards which it claims have minimal impact on the digital signal read off a CD.

Replacing the H80 integrated amplifier (which was HFC’s first introduction to the Norwegian company’s wares back in issue 391 and the first of many Recommended badge winners), Hegel unveiled its H90 to an expectant audience back in May at the High End Show in Munich. Described by Hegel’s Anders Ertzeid as “A Rost that’s been scaled down with a slightly smaller power supply. It’s more cleaner like the Rost, but can deliver more power than the H80”. Released under the banner “Better than yours”, the new integrated amplifier is driven by the manufacturer’s new and improved SoundEngine2, which is claimed to reduce distortion even more than previous Hegel offerings.
