We all know what a good speaker should do, but how to do it is another matter altogether – there are many different ways of attempting this. Moving coil drive units in a wooden box are the most common and simplest type to produce, but arguably the most flawed. Still, because the concept is so old there has been plenty of time to refine it, and Tannoy came up with its own solution nearly 70 years ago. Its first dual concentric design – the Monitor Black of 1946 – was a coaxial speaker combining mid/bass and treble units in one drive unit.

Back in 1988 Tracy Chapman famously sang Talkin’ Bout A Revolution and here we are some 28 years later still talking about the same subject matter, although this Revolution is one that everyone would welcome into their life. We speak, of course, of Tannoy’s rather wonderful Revolution XT speaker range, consisting of the XT 6 standmount, XT 6F and XT 8F floorstanders, XT Mini and XT C centre for home cinema. The range features the Dual Concentric driver that has given Tannoy its distinctive sound over the years. For the uninitiated, time for a quick recap.

In its 90-year history, one of Tannoy's biggest succeses was its HPD loudspeaker series from the seventies. and now the hugely popular speaker series is set to return with every element crucial to its breathtaking dynamic range, clarity of sound and classic look preserved, while refinements that reflect only true audio progress have carefully been added. Hand crafted in Coatbridge, Scotland, every speaker in the new Legacy serieswill include an ‘owner’s care package’ as well as a certificate of authenticity, signed by the experts that made them. The new speakers include the floorstanding Legacy Arden and Legacy Cheviot alongside the standmount Legacy Eaton.

Many readers will be familiar with Tannoy's Mercury series of loudspeakers, and it's very likely that early incarnations of the Scottish-based brand's entry-level series will have been part of a setup that kickstarted one or two hi-fi habits in the first place. The Tannoy brand is so synonymous with loudspeakers thatits name is even featured in the dictionary, and here it unveils the latest incarnation in a long line of Mercury series models. As the name suggests, the Mercury 7 is the seventh generation of the company’s entry-level range, and Tannoy claims the latest series brings a fresh new style that stands out from the crowd. There's a new wood-grain effect finish, in a choice of walnut, light oak or black oak, and behind the removable speaker grilles the drivers have visible mounting bolts and the Tannoy logo is neatly integrated within the tweeter surround.
