While the growing popularity of vinyl has been widespread, less well reported is the increasing popularity of SACD and its hi-res charms. With this very trend in mind, T+A has unveiled its new MP 3100 HV do-it-all multimedia player able to spin CD and SACD discs alongside radio from itsFM and DAB+ tuners and HD streaming from network servers, while Bluetooth is on handfor wireless playback frommobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. The basic design philosophy of the MP 3100 HV is based upon the existing MP 300 HV, meaning that DSD data is handled by the 1-bit converter in native formas a bitstream rather than being converted. This makes it possible to reproduce DSD data upto DSD512 via the USB input.

Hot on the heels of the impressive floorstanding M-6 loudspeaker review in HFC 436, Danish manufacturer Scansonic has announced another addition toits speaker lineup, but this timein the more diminutive guiseof a standmount. The new MK-5 is a compact two-way bookshelf model, boasting the same ultra-light sealed ribbon planar magnetic tweeter that appears in the aforementioned M Series. Formed from a kapton-aluminium sandwich that’s claimed to be just 20µm thick, and boasting a mass that’s described as being as much as 50 times lower than conventional textile, ceramic, beryllium or diamond domes, the tweeter’s membrane is reputed to result in a performance with significantly higher resolution and less material colouration. Partnering the tweeter is a new 114mm Kevlar-coned mid/bass driver (which incidentally is where the K part of the MK-5’s name comes from).

If the Scansonic name seems vaguely familiar it's because the brand has an illustrious history, being deeply rooted in Danish loudspeaker design and engineering. Scansonic goes back some 45 years to whenit was introduced as the name ona then-new line of loudspeakersfrom famous Danish drive-unit manufacturer ScanSpeak. Now owned by Dantax, the same parent company as Raidho, the brand’s loudspeakers are designed by the creator of the renowned Raidho range, acoustic designer Michael Børresen. As a result, Scansonic has plenty in common with the respected Raidho family DNA and pedigree, but at a fraction of the cost.

SDS first introduced the IsoPlatMat and IsoFeet in 2005, but now the business has reached a size where it no longer needs to be supported by Sound Damped Steel Ltd and so it has been re-branded and will now be known as Soundeck. The Soundeck turntable mat (pictured above) is now coated with vinyl so that it doesn¹t need a soft mat to protect the record. Meanwhile, its IsoFeet are now 25 percent thicker and available as rectangles or rounds in stainless or powder coated black finish. A machined damping puck made from SDS stainless steel laminate is also being produced.
