May 2025 issue now on sale
There are several reasons why retro design is a thing in hi-fi at the moment. Firstly, business gravitates towards the money and in these impoverished times, if there’s any loose change knocking about, it’s most likely to be found in the pockets of senior citizens who wish to indulge in a nostalgia buy that reminds them of the good old days.
Then there’s the subconscious style association with the vinyl revival and the notion that the very best recordings were made pre-digital. Plus, there’s the aesthetic – nothing says more about you and your taste than choosing a piece of kit crafted out of some rare wood with a quirky look which sets it apart from the less distinguishable mass of aluminium boxes that sit, largely unnoticed, on your shelves.
Add all that to the fact that many companies are coming around to significant anniversaries, and there’s nothing that says quality and kudos like celebrating your heritage, not to mention the fact that, in this risk averse era, any company would be remiss not to update and revive a proven winner.
Whatever the impetus behind it’s creation, there’s no denying this month’s cover star, Ruark’s R610 music system and Sabre-R speakers, make a mighty handsome acquisition. See for yourself on p50.
Enjoy!
