Dyson debuts OnTrac headphones

Dyson has introduced its first high-fidelity, audio-only headphone: the OnTrac. Each ear cushion is crafted from ultra-soft microfibre and high-grade foam for comfort and acoustic seal. With multi-pivot gimbal arms and a uniquely positioned battery in the headband, the new cans have been designed in a bid to ensure balanced weight distribution across the head.

The company explains that the OnTrac features a custom Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) algorithm, which uses eight microphones, sampling external sound 384,000 times a second to cancel up to 40dB of unwanted noise. With 40mm, 16ohm neodymium speaker drivers and advanced audio signal processing, the company claims the OnTrac can reproduce frequencies from as low as 6Hz to as high as 21,000Hz. Meanwhile, the speaker housing is tilted 13˚ towards the ear for a more direct audio response.

Battery life is quoted as being up to 55 hours with ANC enabled. To switch between ANC on and off, the user simply double taps either ear cup. The Dyson comes in four colours – CNC Aluminium, Copper, Nickel and the Ceramic Cinnabar variant, which has a ceramic-feel painted finish. In addition, users are able to customise their Dyson OnTrac with outer caps and ear cushions in various colours and finishes.

Available caps and cushions for customisation are machined from high-grade aluminium, for a lightweight, durable finish in a range of colours and finishes – ceramic or anodised. Each set is priced at £50.

The ’phones work in tandem with the MyDyson app, which includes real-time sound tracking that monitors in-ear and external volume, alerting users to potentially harmful levels. The app also enables owners to choose between three custom EQ modes: Bass Boost, Neutral and Enhanced. Additional features include Head Detect in which capacitive sensors sense when earcups are removed from the ears, signalling to pause audio. Audio resumes automatically once replaced. Then there’s an intuitive joystick, which allows the user to play, pause, skip, fast forward and rewind tracks or hold down for voice commands.

Available to buy now for £500, you can find out more about the Dyson OnTrac here.
