Dan D’Agostino introduces Momentum C2 preamplifier

Dan D’Agostino Master Audio Systems has released the Momentum C2 preamplifier. Short for “Concept 2,” the company says the Momentum C2 is an advancement on its predecessor, the Momentum HD Preamplifier: “the Momentum C2 incorporates technical features and sonic attributes inspired by the flagship Relentless Preamplifier. Initially developed as the C4 in reference to its new Complementary Four-Circuit topology that makes up the unique input stage, the extent of the advancement within other sections of the component goes so far beyond its front-end circuitry that it calls for a name underscoring the magnitude of this new concept: Momentum C2 Preamplifier.”

Concealed behind a discrete door on the front panel, a headphone jack featuring independent amplifier circuitry is provided for added versatility. Meanwhile, housed in a separate chassis to maximise isolation, power delivery duties are shared by individual transformers dedicated to the analogue and digital circuitry.

The remote control is Bluetooth-enabled, rechargeable via USB and features an LCD screen. Offering bi-directional functionality, it mirrors the information on the C2’s front panel onto its own display, including input, volume and balance settings. Additionally, with the optional DSM installed, song metadata can be displayed.

This is the first D’Agostino Momentum preamp to offer an optional Digital Streaming Module. This enhancement expands connectivity options for digital legacy sources and introduces premier streaming capabilities. Upgradable in the field, the DSM incorporates S/PDIF coaxial, Optical, USB-B, RJ45 and precision resistors incorporated in the volume circuit. Consequently, the bandwidth and transient response remain unaffected by the volume setting. To ensure seamless playback of high-resolution network content without latency, it supports 10/100/1,000 Gigabit Ethernet. Tailored iOS apps facilitate effortless control of music collections, streaming content and unit functions. Native integration with music streaming services like Tidal, Qobuz and Spotify is supported within the app, with additional compatibility for Tidal Connect. Furthermore, MQA decoding is also available.

For users preferring alternative music management systems, Roon Ready certification is also available and the C2 is capable of handling PCM signals up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256 natively. Meanwhile, recognising the crucial role of the analogue section in digital music performance, internal balanced connections ensure optimal signal transfer to the circuitry stage, leveraging the full potential of the preamplifier’s power and analogue circuitry across its two chassis.

Available in a choice of Silver, Black or custom painted finishes, every Momentum C2 Preamplifier is hand-built in D’Agostino’s Arizona factory. The UK RRP is £60,000, with the optional digital streaming module adding £11,400 to the price.
