Bowie stars in the film as Thomas Jerome Newton, a humanoid alien who comes to Earth from a distant planet on a mission to take water back to his home planet, which is in the midst of a catastrophic drought. Famously, Bowie wrote a soundtrack to the movie, which was never used by Roeg and remains one of cinema's great lost masterpieces.
