SVS brings flagship 17-Ultra Revolution subwoofer series to UK

SVS has launched its flagship 17-Ultra Revolution subwoofer series in the UK via Karma AV. Mirroring the size of its 16-Ultra predecessors, the new subwoofers feature a 432mm dual voice-coil SVS driver, dual mono-block Class D amplification, uprated power supply and advanced DSP and app control. Consequently, the company claims: “the sealed box SB17-Ultra and ported PB17-Ultra designs are the most powerful, sophisticated and user-friendly SVS subwoofers ever introduced to the consumer market”.

With a high-excursion 432mm design, the sub features a 25kg toroidal ferrite magnet motor using SVS’ first dual 205mm, copper-clad aluminium voice coil to deliver output and control over the 432mm glass fibre composite cone. SVS says this combination generates high sound pressure levels to well below the threshold of human hearing – 15Hz (-3dB) for the SB17-Ultra and 12Hz (-3dB) for the PB17-Ultra, together with frequency response accuracy and acoustic linearity.

Also featured is a new dual mono-block STA-2800D Class D amplifier with MOSFET output stage. Each amp drives one of the dual voice coils to increase the power into the motor while exerting control and maximising output potential. Eight 60A/200V MOSFETs deliver the high current necessary for reference-level output with maximum efficiency. In an effort to meet its full output potential, SVS has designed a new power supply, complete with onboard AC line conditioner and power factor correction, which stabilises the incoming voltage, corrects waveform distortions and eliminates electromagnetic and radio interference. SVS claims that by doing so it continuously optimises signal quality while ensuring the subs remain impervious to voltage fluctuations.

An advanced, high-resolution 295MHz Analog Devices DSP orchestrates every function of the amplifier to shape in-room response and stabilise AC voltage delivery while managing a multi-point thermal and current monitoring system for optimal performance and efficiency. In addition, advanced digital audio processing and DACs with 120dB S/N provide lower noise with greater headroom and fidelity.

It comes with a dedicated app (iOS, Android and Amazon Fire), which manages calibration and setup, featuring controls for volume, low pass filter, phase, polarity, six parametric equalisers, room gain compensation, port tuning (for the PB17-Ultra) and power management. There are also three memory presets for system adjustments to match listening preferences.

New to the 17-Ultra Revolution subs is intuitive auto EQ subwoofer room correction, which uses the app and built-in microphone on a user’s smartphone to apply equalisation filters automatically for optimal room gain and in-room frequency response.

In/outputs include unbalanced RCA and balanced XLR I/O pairs, IR and trigger inputs and USB in for SVS SoundPath wireless operation. For those without access to the app, SVS has provided a rear panel OLED display, which includes a ‘Display Flip’ function for easier operation from above. Finish options include Piano Gloss Black and Premium Black Oak wood veneers, priced as follows: SB17-Ultra Black Oak, Ultra Black Gloss: £3,250 and PB17-Ultra Black Oak, Ultra Black Gloss: £3,750.
