It is now recognised that it is essential to have a good-quality mains supply to allow any audio system to perform at its best. The Powergrip YG-2 6-way power conditioner contains several different types of filters that effectively isolate the connected devices, preventing their undesirable influence on each other, as well as helping avoid interference produced by the network. The filters ensure minimum harmonic distortion and are able to handle large current impulses, unlike traditional power filters. Switching relays operate using a zero-cross technology, which switches the loads on and off when the supply voltage sine wave crosses the zero-point. This results in a soft switch on and off, even under high current loads.

The YG-2 handles mains voltages between 190–256V and can provide just under 3.7kW of power. Measuring 440 x 80 x 185mm (WxHxD), it fits easily into any system requiring up to six outlet sockets. These are split into three groups – Digital for low-powered delicate signal sources, Analogue for conventional-powered devices such as preamps and High Current for larger integrated and power amps.

The YG-2 provides three levels of protection: filters for absorption of interference and minor surges, varistors to absorb heavy voltage surges in the network and a circuit that deenergises the YG-2 in the event that supply voltage exceeds the permissible level. In addition, it is equipped with a self-diagnostic system, so in the event of a failure any connected equipment will be deenergised and flashing indicators will inform the user of the problems.

Sound quality
Connecting the YG-2, my mains voltage is displayed and each group turns on in sequence with an agreeable click. Playing Scarlatti’s Sonata in G, the natural decays of each note of the harpsichord are superb while the silences between musical phrases are inky black – indicating a very low noise floor. In addition, it is really well made and robust, and should fit in discreetly with any hi-fi setup. NR
