From the moment Rega revived its Planar name with the introduction of the Planar 1, Planar 2 (HFC 415) and Planar 3 (HFC 411) turntables in 2016, it was just a matter of time before an RP6 successor would become a reality. Rumours had been circulating for some time after the Planar 3 debuted well over a year ago, and anticipation was finally broken with the official announcement of the release of the new Planar 6 in mid-July. 

The good news is that it was well worth the wait. So much more than just a beefed-up version of its Planar 3 sibling, the Planar 6 boasts a new lightweight, single-piece plinth, improved two-piece platter and superior power supply design that borrows from Rega’s flagship RP10 turntable.

The Neo PSU (right) uses a DSP generator built around a high-stability crystal to generate an extremely accurate sinusoidal wave form for exceptional pitch stability regardless of fluctuations in the mains supply run.

Dress to impress
Despite the presence of the new lightweight plinth, the Planar 6 quickly shatters any preconceived notions about bass extension being dependant on mass. The swell of low frequencies that greets us is quite phenomenal – not just for a light turntable, but full stop.

While the speed and togetherness that we’ve come to expect from Rega’s record players is present and correct, it’s the pitch stability that really impresses. Standard torture tests of sustained notes quickly reveal the huge role that the Neo PSU has to play in the Rega’s success, while even the slightest hint of induced noise is completely absent. Tonal realism is impressive, with fine details that can so often be missed by rival turntables being brought to the fore, while the sense of speed and finesse is as good as it gets at the price.
